Baby sleep advice has a strange tendency to become increasingly precise the longer you look at it. At first you are told roughly how much babies sleep. Then you find a sample routine. Before long, you are looking at a timetable telling you that your baby should nap at 9:15, feed at 10:30 and be asleep for the night at 7:00, while the baby in front of you has been awake since 5:40 and has just fallen asleep in the car.

Schedules can be useful. Strict schedules are not the same thing as useful rhythms.

Babies gradually develop more recognisable patterns across the first year, and many families eventually find that they can predict roughly when sleep is likely to happen. That can make life much easier. But a baby does not need every day to be identical in order to sleep well, and the fact that today’s naps happened at different times from yesterday’s does not mean you have broken the routine.

Routine and schedule are not quite the same thing

I find it useful to separate these ideas because they are often used interchangeably. A rhythm is something you begin to recognise. Your baby usually wakes somewhere around this time, tends to become ready for sleep after a certain part of the morning, often takes another nap after lunch, and nighttime sleep tends to happen within a reasonably predictable part of the evening.

A strict schedule tells you what should happen according to the clock, often regardless of what happened earlier that day. The first can be extremely helpful. The second becomes a problem when you start trying to make the baby fit the timetable rather than allowing the timetable to describe the baby.

At six months, for example, your baby’s day may already feel more organised. Perhaps three naps are becoming common. But four naps can still fit perfectly well, particularly on a day when the naps are short. A recognisable rhythm is useful. A perfectly repeatable day is not the goal.

Why do online schedules look so convincing?

Because they are tidy. A timetable with a 7:00 wake, naps at 9:30 and 1:30, and a 7:30 bedtime looks reassuringly manageable. It also removes uncertainty, which is very attractive when you are tired and spending a surprising amount of your day wondering whether another human being needs to sleep. The difficulty is that the timetable usually hides the variables that created it.

What if your baby wakes at 5:30 instead of seven? What if the first nap lasts twenty-eight minutes rather than ninety? What if they sleep for two hours in the carrier at lunchtime? What if nursery gets an enormous afternoon nap out of them? What if yesterday they needed three naps and today two longer ones fill the whole day?

The same age does not produce the same day. At four months, one baby may have four or five short naps while another has three longer sleeps. Both patterns can fit normal development. Nap length changes how many opportunities for sleep will fit into the day.

This is why copying somebody else’s schedule often works beautifully for the baby whose natural pattern already resembles it and much less beautifully for everybody else.

But don’t babies need consistency?

They benefit from predictability, but predictability does not mean identical clock times. There is good evidence that consistent bedtime routines are associated with better sleep outcomes in young children. A familiar sequence can help a child recognise that the active part of the day is coming to an end. Bath, pyjamas, milk, story, cuddles, song, sleep — whatever your family’s version looks like — can become a useful cue for what comes next.

But a bedtime routine and a fixed bedtime are different things. You can begin the same familiar routine at 7:20 one evening and 7:50 the next because today’s final nap ended later. The sequence is still predictable even though the clock moved.

And even the most beautifully consistent bedtime routine cannot manufacture sleep pressure that is not there. If your toddler slept until four in the afternoon, they may simply not be biologically ready for another long sleep at seven.

Bedtime is not automatically seven o’clock

There is a surprisingly persistent idea that babies and toddlers should have an early bedtime, often somewhere around seven, and that moving away from this is somehow bad sleep practice.

Sleep biology does not give us one correct bedtime for all children.

Circadian timing varies between individuals, and bedtime is also influenced by culture and family life. A large international study of nearly 30,000 infants and toddlers found average bedtimes differing by almost three hours between countries. Children around the world are clearly not all receiving the same biological instruction to be asleep at seven.

This does not mean bedtime does not matter. If your child must wake at 6:30 for nursery, regularly falling asleep at eleven may leave too little opportunity for enough sleep. The important question is not whether bedtime looks respectable on Instagram. It is whether the timing allows this child to get enough sleep within this family’s day.

Start with when your baby actually wakes

This sounds obvious, but many schedules quietly assume a fixed morning. A baby who wakes at 5:30 and a baby who wakes at 8:00 simply do not have the same day available to them. Their first sleep is unlikely to fall at exactly the same clock time, and if it does, one of them has been awake considerably longer.

The same is true after naps. If yesterday’s lunchtime sleep lasted thirty minutes and today’s lasts two hours, the next sleep may move. If the final nap happens unusually late, nighttime sleep may move too. This is why I prefer to ask what the sleep that actually happened does to the rest of the day rather than whether each nap landed in its assigned slot.

What if my baby sleeps better on a schedule?

Then use it. There is no prize for being spontaneous. Some babies really do become impressively predictable. Their mornings begin at roughly the same time, naps settle into stable places and they become sleepy at a very similar time each evening. Some families also function much better when the day has structure. You may need to organise work, childcare, school runs, meals or another child’s activities, and knowing roughly when the baby sleeps can make the entire household easier to run.

If your schedule fits your baby and your family, there is nothing wrong with it.

The problem is not predictability. The problem begins when you continue enforcing the schedule after the baby has started giving you repeated evidence that it no longer fits.

Perhaps bedtime now takes ninety minutes. Perhaps the final nap has become impossible. Perhaps your child is lying happily awake in the cot while you are becoming increasingly desperate outside it. Those are reasons to look at the timing, not evidence that you need to become even more consistent.

Sometimes the schedule changes before we notice

This happens all the time around nap transitions. Your baby’s old timetable may have worked beautifully for weeks. Then they begin staying awake longer, one nap becomes difficult, or two substantial naps leave very little room before bedtime.

The schedule is still the same. The baby has changed.

Between twelve and eighteen months, for example, one nap and two naps can belong to the same transition. A child may take one nap on some days, two on others, and occasionally one main sleep plus a tiny late-afternoon doze. The fact that yesterday’s pattern worked does not mean today’s must look identical. This flexibility is not inconsistency. It is responsiveness to changing sleep need.

What about childcare?

Childcare makes the idea of one perfect schedule even less realistic. Your baby may sleep differently with another caregiver. They may take short naps at nursery and a long contact nap at home. They might sleep at the nursery’s fixed lunchtime rest period even though their home nap usually happens earlier. They may have two naps there and three with you, or exactly the reverse.

The two environments do not need to match. What matters in the evening is the sleep your baby actually had that day. If childcare sleep was unusually short, another nap or an earlier night may fit. If they had a huge late nap, nighttime sleep may arrive later.

Trying to pretend the nursery naps did not happen because they are not part of your home schedule generally does not improve matters.

What if our days are never the same?

That is also normal family life. There may be workdays and home days, school runs, grandparents, appointments, weekends, trips and the occasional day when the nap happens in the buggy because you needed to buy groceries rather than spend forty minutes in a dark bedroom.

Babies do not need perfectly identical days in order to sleep well. Even travel does not require reproducing home down to the minute. Familiar anchors — perhaps the same bedtime song, sleeping bag, story, feeding routine or caregiver — may give enough continuity while naps and bedtime move around the circumstances of the day.

A routine should help family life function. Family life should not have to disappear in order to protect the routine.

How much flexibility is too much?

There is no universal amount. Some children tolerate large changes in sleep timing without much difficulty. Others seem to function better when the day stays within a narrower range. The child in front of you gives you useful information.

If wildly different days are followed by very difficult evenings, repeated split nights or a child who seems constantly tired, you may find that some more structure helps. Perhaps morning can begin within a more consistent window. Perhaps the main nap can stay roughly in the same part of the day. Perhaps bedtime can vary, but not by three hours every night.

This is different from believing that sleep must occur at precisely 9:07 because the schedule says so.

Structure can be useful without becoming rigid.

Watch what happens when sleep is offered

One of the simplest ways to tell whether a schedule still fits is to notice what settling actually looks like.

If your child is sleepy and needs your help to cross into sleep, rocking, feeding, cuddling, carrying or lying beside them may work beautifully. But if you start bedtime at seven every night and your child consistently does not fall asleep until 8:15, I would become curious about seven.

Research in toddlers has found substantial individual variation in circadian timing, and when parent-selected bedtime is poorly aligned with a child’s biological timing, settling can take longer and bedtime resistance can increase.

Rather than immediately changing how you settle, you can experiment with the timing. Start a little later for several days and see what happens. If settling suddenly becomes easier, you have learned something. If your child is miserable and clearly needed the earlier sleep, you have learned something too.

That is much more useful than trying to win a battle against the clock.

A schedule should describe your baby, not control them

There is nothing wrong with enjoying a predictable day. It can be enormously helpful to know that your baby will probably sleep around lunchtime or that your toddler is usually ready for bed somewhere around eight.

But I would keep the word probably. The baby who normally naps twice may need three sleeps after a very early start. The toddler who usually naps may skip it today. Tomorrow may look exactly like the old routine again. A late nap may mean a later night. A short nap may mean sleep comes sooner.

That isn’t a broken schedule. That is a baby having a different day.

You do not need to choose between complete chaos and running your baby’s life by the minute. Somewhere between those two is a recognisable rhythm with room to move — enough predictability to make life easier, and enough flexibility to notice when your child is telling you that today is different.
